NARRATIVE* (Suggested 500 word limit for each response):

1.            Candidate Statement

My involvement with CSI dates back to 1985, when, as a rookie salesman for Sonneborn Building Products in Northern California, I was encouraged by my boss to “get involved with CSI”. My position with the SF Chapter was “keeper of the book” which was the attendance roster that they kept. My task was to bring the book to all Chapter meetings. That experience taught me to be responsible and reliable, and also earned me my first CSI Award. I also recall my first CSI seminar “Selling to Design Professionals” taught by “Chief “ Boyd of the Tulsa Chapter, sponsored by the San Francisco chapter in 1986.

After my relocation back to the Southeast in 1989, I continued my CSI involvement with my next employer. Tom Doman, the owner, was a Past President of the Atlanta Chapter and was impressed with my previous involvement in SF. Since then, I have climbed the ranks of the Atlanta Chapter, chairing and working on various committees, Treasurer, Industry Director, and eventually President in 2005. That year we hosted the SE Region conference, and my involvement with the Region began at that time, culminating with my current Position of Region President.

My current company has also supported my involvement, and I have attended all except 2 CSI Conventions since 1996. My experience in CSI and my commitment to the organization are my best qualifications for this position. My most significant positions include being Chapter President of a large and dynamic Chapter, and being involved with 3 SE Region Conferences and 2 Region Leadership conferences. My most significant awards are the Chapter President Award from Institute, and a SE Region Award from the 2004 Region Conference. I am also proud to have been involved in the New Governance for the SE Region as a model for the entire CSI organization.

I am honored to be nominated for the position of Institute Director representing the SE Region and if elected will do my best to support the objectives and concerns of the SE Region and the Institute of CSI.

Sincerely,

John S. Robinson, CSI/ CDT

President SE Region CSI

2.     What is your perception of the role CSI should play in the construction community?

CSI needs to be the conduit for which information, certification, education and technical expertise flow to and from the Product representatives to the designers, owners and contractors. CSI is the only organization that represents all of these groups equally and needs to become recognized as the source for the exchange of expertise to benefit all participants.

3.     In your opinion, rank the three most important goals/targets that CSI should aim for?

1. Diversification of Membership

2. Continue to Improve Education and Certification opportunities.

3. Focus on Emerging professionals as the future leaders of the organization.

4.     What do you see as CSI’s primary challenges in the year ahead?

Retention of membership will be very challenging in this economic climate. CSI needs to reach out to all areas of the Building Industry to diversify and ultimately grow membership.

5.     Please describe how you believe you would contribute to the mission, vision and goals of

CSI as outlined in CSI’s Strategic Plan.

The Strategic plan incorporates the mission of CSI with 3 basic strategies.

Communication excellence is a key factor to success at any endeavor, and is critical in the diverse building products industry. I have incorporated these practices into my daily business life.

I have always been cognizant of the diversity of the building team and the different individual agendas and project goals that need to be integrated into the common goal of the team. My experience with all members of the building team will be valuable in reaching out to all members of the team.

Project documentation has always been a challenging and vital process that can have a significant impact on the success or failure of a project. I have been a product representative in the Roofing and waterproofing Industry since 1982 and recognize the importance of this for initial installation and product performance as well as building and product maintenance throughout the life of the structure or system.

I am confident that my many years of involvement with all aspects of the building product Industry will

give me the experience required to contribute to the mission, vision, and goals of the CSI Strategic

       Plan.
