Speaker Mr. Brian Carey, CSI, CDT

Company: Carlisle Syntec

Event Description

This course addresses integration of membrane air barriers with the substrate, insulation, cladding and other adjacent systems. This integration of materials results in a high-performance building envelope, enabling the Owner meet and exceed the ever more stringent energy efficiency requirementsThis 1-hour presentation will fulfill the following four learning objectives.

Understand the benefits of an airtight building envelope

The speaker introduces existing code requirements for air barriers. Air barrier benefits are supported by case studies, field experience and building science.

Define the air barrier and recognize commonly-used air barrier materials

The air barrier is defined using performance requirements taken from code language. Compliance paths employing various types of air barrier materials and installation techniques are discussed.

Gain a basic understanding of how membrane type air barriers are specified, installed and inspected on a Project.

This is the introduction to self-adhering and fluid-applied membrane air barrier products, essential properties and installation techniques.   Examples are shown of proper installation in building envelope details. Mockup construction, field testing and building envelope commissioning are also discussed.

Understand the differences between vapor-permeable and vapor-barrier membranes, and when one should be used versus the other.Membrane use in wall assemblies is presented with consideration for climate, building use and code requirements for insulation and vapor barriers. Guidance is given for selection of air & vapor barrier membranes versus vapor-permeable air barrier membranes.
