AIA Northeast Georgia presents its 3rd Annual Historic Chicopee Georgia Tours on April 4, 2019. Additional hosts include GAASLA, GPA as an associate to GAASLA and CSI Atlanta.

Driving tours will be by 15 seat comfort vans and will run from 2:00- 4:00 pm on a circuit through 3500 acre development of Johnson and Johnson in 1927. This will include the Mill, Village, the watershed which is in the Elachee Nature Science Center property, Chicopee Woods Golf Course, Chicopee Park among others. There will be stops to get out and observe key sites.

The touring will end at Elachee and will be followed by two lectures, the first being Ben Sutton of The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and second from Peter Gordon of Elachee. Both will be in the Mundy Education Hall and run from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.

We will board the vans and go to Left Nut Brewing on the Mill campus for a special dinner from 6:45 - 8:00 pm. At the brewery will be presentation tables for our vendor sponsors. The dinner is catered by PouchPies of Norcross & Athens (hopefully).  Each attendee will get two beer tickets if so desired.

Chicopee is a very large medical supplies manufacturing mill, its unique Garden City inspired village of 250 houses, recreation and support businesses, and a vast pristine watershed.

Chicopee is about 4 miles south of Gainesville on Atlanta Highway. Construction took two years following a master plan created by Earl Draper and building designs by Joseph Sirrine. Utilities for the village were through underground walkable tunnels connected to the mill.

Many innovations were manifest, as the mill was the first single story structure and the individualized houses had underground power, water, sanitary plumbing. The site is on the Eastern Continental Divide which is very important for the watershed.

Attendees will include Architects, Landscape Architects and City Planners, Civil Engineers, Preservationists and local government officials who are developing preservation standards.

A detailed look at the design of the Phipps Plaza Redevelopment. The Phipps Plaza development re-envisions a major anchor tenant component of the Phipps Plaza mall in the Buckhead region of Atlanta, GA. A three story parking deck and department store building will be demolished and rebuilt as a vibrant, experiential mixed use regional destination. A new four story parking podium will support a Nobu Hotel and Restaurant, a 13 story Office Tower, and a new Anchor Building addition to the exiting mall, integrated into a common streetscape and sharing an outdoor event plaza. The project is currently under construction as of January 2019 at an approximate cost of $230 Million. This presentation will cover the unique Integrated Design Build process of the Beck Group and how architecture, construction, estimating, and the owner work together on the pursuit, design, pricing, and the build of this exciting redevelopment.
